12 June 2009.  Discussion with Hospice Caring Inc.

On Friday June 12, ASIF + Foods-4-Thought directors, Joan Goodman and Troy Crites, went to Hospice Caring Inc in Gaithersburg MD to talk about Teen Suicide and Self Injury to a team of over 20 volunteers and staff at Hospice Caring Inc.  Since 1989, Hospice Caring, Inc. has been the only non-medical, volunteer hospice in Montgomery County.  Trained and dedicated volunteers provide practical and emotional support to terminally ill adults and children and their families, and to anyone grieving the death of a loved one. The talks by both Joan and Troy dealt with key points for the Grief Counselors to especially consider in helping teens dealing with depression, including key issues surrounding cutting, and ways to assure all of the potential resources – within schools and with external counselors – are brought together to help those who are depressed.  Hospice Caring also runs a special support group: Coping with a Suicide Death which meets 2nd and 4th Monday evenings of the month.  The open discussion of the magnitude of loss and the impact on family members and students was beneficial to all in attendance.
